Lemongrass

(Cymbopogon citratus)

This tall (1.5 m), widespread perennial grass grows in tufts with many narrow, sharp leaves starting from a rhizome. Crushing a leaf releases a very pleasant lemony aroma.

From India

Lemongrass thrives in the tropical regions of India, Indonesia, and Brazil. It grows rapidly, allowing for the first harvest just two months after planting and subsequent harvests every 3–5 months.

In Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean, it is called “fever grass.” Lemongrass is brewed into a tea that is believed to fight against fever and other symptoms of cold!
